Chapter 13

Caleb walked into his private office and deposited his briefcase on his desk. The tan case was stuffed with all the loose pages that, once put together, supposedly comprised the contract that Al Sutherland said he had signed.

If asked, Caleb couldn’t very well say that he was looking forward to emptying his briefcase and having the avalanche of papers come tumbling out onto his desk. But he knew that he had to.

Someday, he told himself, he was going to learn to say no. But then, he thought the next moment, if sacrificing his marriage and two long-term relationships hadn’t taught him how to hold some of himself back while involved in conducting an investigation, he sincerely doubted that he was ever going to change his ways.

Flipping open the locks on his briefcase, he opened the lid and looked down at the pile waiting for his attention.

A movement going past his open office door caught his attention and he looked up. Rebekah had nearly made it out of his view when Caleb called out her name.

Dutifully, the assistant retraced her steps and stuck her head into Caleb’s office. “Is there something that I can do for you?” Rebekah wanted to know.

“Yes, you can send Morgan into my office,” Caleb told the assistant.

Rebekah made no attempt to act on his request. “I would if I could, boss man, but I can’t.”

Caleb’s eyes narrowed as he looked at his employee more closely. “And just why is that?” he asked.

“Because Ms. Colton still hasn’t come in today,” Rebekah answered simply.

Caleb glanced at his watch. It was close to two in the afternoon.

“I know,” Rebekah said, noticing the attorney looking at his watch. She guessed at what he had to be thinking. “It must be nice to come and go as you please.”

Caleb didn’t say anything about his assistant’s comment and just went to the heart of the matter. “Did my sister call to tell you where she was or when she would be in?”

It was obvious that Rebekah found the question amusing. “She doesn’t check in with me, Mr. Colton, unless it’s to call to find out about something in her schedule. But if I hear anything,” the older woman promised him, “I’ll be sure to let you know.”

Rebekah had just stepped away from his doorway when she suddenly made her way back into his office. He looked at her quizzically.

Never missing a beat, Rebekah announced, “This is me, letting you know that your sister just walked in.”

Caleb abandoned his briefcase and the contract he’d been planning to examine. He stepped out into the hallway just in time to practically bump smack into Morgan. The latter was making her way to her own office.

Reflexes had him taking a step back to avoid a collision between them. As he did so, he took a second look at his twin. He was accustomed to Morgan being impeccably groomed. There was never a single hair on her head that was ever out of place.

Until now.

He saw Rebekah looking at him over his twin’s head.
